The University Inn Chico offers an affordable stay in downtown Chico, benefiting from recent renovations and a convenient location near restaurants and Chico State. However, recent reviews highlight significant concerns regarding cleanliness, maintenance, and responsiveness from staff.
Hotel has been good, for a stay. The staff are helpful and friendly, as a single woman I have had the pleasure of staying near the staff who work and live here. They're always ready to greet with a smile, whether they are on the clock or off. Maintenance and the front desk are ready to fix any issue including my refrigerator that stopped working mid stay, at a late period in the night so I would not lose my groceries. I'm glad to have found this place.
The hotel staff were sweet. The hotel itself was okay. The bathrooms were not clean. They had hair and leftover yuck in the sink and bathtub. The toilet kept clogging. The floors were sticky, and I noticed there was a spill by the beds, so I just used a towel to quickly clean the floors. We only stayed for a night, so it was doable but wouldn’t recommend it for more than that.
This is the absolute trashiest hotel I've stayed at in Butte County - if it weren't for the good hearted representative, Phillip, who made my weekend bearable. Thank you for being genuine hearted Phillip! You deserve a better employer! P.S. - If you want a free ice machine or Wifi that works don't come here. No shit I cannot connect any of my devices despite trying all night :/
Be careful of this hotel... I did get this hotel at a good price, at first. By the time it was all done, I could have stayed at a nice hotel. They took my whole deposit because of a stain on the sheet. The sheets were dirty because we were there 3 nights but nothing out of the ordinary. Not stained. (Mind you, they don't offer housekeeping at all.) I called to try and talk to the boss. They told me to call back in 30min. I did. They ignored all calls. I had to call from a different number to get the front desk to answer. And they still wouldn't let me talk to him, and told me to call in the morning. I called in the morning. Still nothing. I tried to do a walk thru when I was leaving. The front desk lady told me it's OK. We will put money back on the card. ( Later on, I confronted her about it, and she said they don't do walk thru with guests.) I'm a housekeeper. And cleaned that room before leaving. I'm very upset and feel like I got scammed. Not to mention, all ice machines broke, and the vending machine broke. Iron missing. Rooms not cleaned well.
I forgot my deposit when I checked out approx 6 months earlier. They told it would be there whenever I could return(illegal to send cash in US mail.) When I returned on my way to Shasta, they still had my deposit, applied to this stay & I left with it the next day! Thank you University Inn!!! 5?????'s!!!
Where do I start... Maybe the cockroaches. Replies to past reviews say that there is routine pest control here, but it is clearly not enough. We saw one in the bathroom (which was not cleaned very well at all, might I add - brown spots on the shower curtain and dried shampoo on the tiles) during our stay. The iron was missing completely. The free wifi that is advertised does not reach all of the rooms. The hair dryer is broken. The toilet doesn't flush right. The soundproofing is non existent - you get all of the road noise as well as people constantly yelling near the hotel. We payed $200 for two nights, I would expect to be able to stay somewhere without roaches at the very least. And blood on the stairs?? We have a phlebotomist in our group. It is not paint. We are definitely not going to be staying here again. Not worth the money. I'd rather stay at motel 6.
I've been coming to Chico a few times a year for work and since the remodel of this University Inn, I have been staying here ever since. I particularly like the location of this place, being right on Main Street just two blocks from the center of downtown. I’m usually coming alone on business, so I appreciate the quick walking access to restaurants, bars, and Chico State. I'd stayed here before the remodel when it was a bit old and dated just due to its price point. Now that it's been remodeled, it's a bit more expensive but still one of the cheapest hotels in Chico. I still find for the price, the new rooms are pretty good value. There is no breakfast and the vending machine didn't work when I last checked, but overall everything else is pretty good. The king bed is comfortable and I usually bring back leftovers and store in the decent sized fridge. The front desk is very helpful which helps me feel safe staying here alone as a girl. If you're looking for an affordable stay and don’t need anything fancy shmancy this is the one!
I was passing through Chico and stayed here for 2 nights. The outside looked really interesting and modern but it’s really just a renovated older motel. The rooms weren’t particularly modern but they were clean and fairly big. The beds were comfortable. Some of the furniture is dated but they have unique features like a retro-style microwave. The girl at the front desk was very nice and suggested a bunch of things to do in and around Chico. The best part of this place was the location - we were basically able to walk to every store and restaurant we visited during our stay, and bidwell park was only a short drive away. Given the location, quality of the room, and price, this motel offers great value and I’d recommend to others too.
I was skeptical reading these older reviews but this place clearly has been remodeled recently. I stayed here because it’s in the middle of downtown so you can walk to all the restaurants. The room was clean and included a fridge and microwave. The people working the desk were really helpful and fun to talk to. It doesn’t have the same amenities of more expensive hotels, but this place offers a great location and decent room for a very good price, especially on weekend nights when everything seems expensive. I’d recommend if you’re looking for an affordable stay in Chico.
I read some of the other reviews on here and just want to put a disclaimer out there. My star rating is based on the quality I got for the price I paid!! If you're wanting a hotel with all the facilities and lots of guest service like breakfasts and room service, I would recommend going to a different hotel. If you're like me and you're wanting something super cheap and close to lots of restaurants, the downtown area, and the university, I would definitely recommend this place. I stayed here a couple years ago (before the remodel) and wasn't a fan. I knew they had remodeled the place so I booked a room here for a couple days last week. This time around was way better than I was expecting. The room was big and clean except for some dust in the corner of the bathroom, the bed was pretty big too and comfortable, and the air conditioner worked perfect. I interacted with two different staff members and both were super friendly, professional, and accommodating. I had zero issues checking in or out. I had a hard time finding any pictures of the place online from after the remodel, so I took one of the room we stayed in for anyone considering booking (P.S I took this as we were checking out, everything was made up when we checked in)
